Scientific Name: Rhododendron groenlandicum (formerly Ledum groenlandicum)

Add a fragrant, traditional native shrub to your landscape with Labrador Tea (Rhododendron groenlandicum). Indeed, it grows in wetlands and moist forests throughout British Columbia. In fact, its aromatic leaves have been used for generations to brew a warming herbal tea.

Because Labrador Tea evolved in bogs, it is well adapted to the moist, acidic, peaty soils of Interior BC. In addition, it offers clusters of white flowers, rusty-fuzzed evergreen leaves, and a low branching habit. As a result, it works well in wetland gardens, pollinator plantings, and herb collections.

It grows naturally in bogs, swamps, and peaty ground. Even so, this culturally important species settles well into a planned wetland garden. Above all, it supports pollinators while offering a fragrant, traditional harvest.

Ecological Benefits of Labrador Tea

Labrador Tea’s spring flowers feed native bees and pollinators. Meanwhile, its evergreen cover shelters insects and small wildlife in wetland habitats. In addition, its roots form mycorrhizal associations that help it draw nitrogen and phosphorus from peaty soils. As a result, this culturally significant species supports both pollinator habitat and wetland restoration.

Please note: Labrador Tea contains natural compounds that can be harmful in quantity. Therefore, traditional preparation uses a weak infusion in moderation. Above all, it should never be boiled hard or drunk in large amounts.
